Notion AI vs ChatGPT: Which Should Your Team Use in 2026?

Use Notion AI if your team already works in Notion and is on a Business or Enterprise plan. Use ChatGPT if you want one assistant that works across every tool, starting from a free plan or $20 a month for Plus. They are different products: Notion AI works on your Notion workspace and the apps connected to it, while ChatGPT is a standalone assistant you open separately.
This comparison uses the vendors' own pricing and help pages as of October 2026. Both products change plans and limits often, so check the linked pages before you buy.

What Notion AI is, and what it costs
Notion AI sits inside your workspace. Notion Agent can take multi-step tasks and create or edit pages and databases using context from your workspace and connected apps. Search finds answers across your pages and connected tools. AI Meeting Notes transcribes and summarizes meetings, and AI blocks and database autofill help with writing and tables.
Notion AI is available on Business and Enterprise. On Free and Plus you get a limited trial of AI responses, then a prompt to upgrade. On the USD pricing page, Business is $20 per seat a month billed yearly or $24 billed monthly, and Plus is $10 or $12 without the full AI features. That Business price is the whole workspace plan, not an AI add-on, so you are paying for Notion itself as well.
AI usage is metered in credits. Notion's help center says each Business or Enterprise member gets 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits a month, and the amounts may vary by plan. Custom Agents, Workers and some high-cost models use workspace Notion credits instead, sold at $10 per 1,000 on a monthly plan or $13 per 1,000 on an annual plan. The help center says the new credit system applies to new workspaces from October 19, 2026 and to existing workspaces from November 2, 2026.
What ChatGPT is, and what it costs
ChatGPT is OpenAI's general assistant. It answers questions, drafts and edits text, analyzes files, generates images and runs deep research, and it is not tied to one product. OpenAI's pricing page lists six plans: Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise.
Plus is $20 a month, according to OpenAI's help center. OpenAI's pricing FAQ says Go, Free and Plus are designed for individuals, and that Business is for teams and starts at 2 users. Business adds connections to Google Workspace, Slack, GitHub and Microsoft 365, and OpenAI says it does not train on business data by default. Enterprise is priced through sales. Model names and limits change often, so use the model picker in your account for what you can use today.
Is Notion AI just ChatGPT inside Notion?
No. Notion says Notion AI runs on a mix of large language models, some provided directly by the model makers and some through inference providers, and that the list changes over time. Notion Agent users can pick between models, and some high-cost models need credits and an admin to turn them on. The difference that matters for buyers is context and permissions: Notion AI works from your workspace and connected apps and says it respects your existing access, while a standalone assistant works from what you give it.
Where each one is the better pick
| Job | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Summarize and edit pages that live in Notion | Notion AI | It works on the page in place and can create or edit pages and databases for you |
| Ask a question across your wiki, tasks and connected apps | Notion AI | Search covers your workspace and connectors, with citations, within your permissions |
| Meeting notes saved next to your project pages | Notion AI | AI Meeting Notes live in the workspace and are searchable with Notion AI |
| Work outside Notion: email drafts, research, files, code | ChatGPT | It is not tied to a workspace |
| Try AI with no commitment | ChatGPT | The Free plan includes unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails |
| One person, no Notion Business plan | ChatGPT | Plus costs $20 a month; Notion AI needs a Business seat |
What a five-person team would pay
Notion Business for five people is 5 x $20 = $100 a month billed yearly, or 5 x $24 = $120 billed monthly, before any extra Notion credits. Five ChatGPT Plus plans are 5 x $20 = $100 a month. ChatGPT Business is the plan built for teams, but its seat prices did not load on OpenAI's pricing page when we checked, so we are not quoting them. The totals look alike, but they buy different things: the Notion figure includes the workspace itself, and the ChatGPT figure buys an assistant that is separate from your documents.
How to choose
- Choose Notion AI if your team's pages and databases already live in Notion, and the Business plan is worth it for the workspace on its own.
- Choose ChatGPT if your work is spread across many tools, you want a free starting point, or only a few people need AI.
- Use both if the work splits: Notion AI for questions about your own workspace, ChatGPT for open-ended drafting and research. Keep company data out of any assistant that your permissions model does not cover.
If your team lives in Slack or Microsoft Teams instead, Kipwise Agent is an AI agent in both, at $10 per user a month from 3 users.
Frequently asked questions
Is Notion AI free?
Not fully. Free and Plus workspaces get a limited trial, and after that Notion asks you to upgrade to Business or Enterprise. See Is Notion AI really free? for the details.
Can ChatGPT read my Notion pages?
Only if you paste the content in or connect it through a supported route. Notion also says AI apps connected through Notion MCP, such as ChatGPT or Claude, can search your connected sources on Business and Enterprise plans, and they only see what your own connection can see.
Do I need ChatGPT if I have Notion AI?
Not necessarily. Notion AI covers work inside Notion and connected apps. Many teams still keep a general assistant for tasks outside Notion.
Which is cheaper?
For one person, ChatGPT Free or Plus at $20 a month. For a team already paying for Notion Business, Notion AI is included in that seat price, subject to credit limits.
